• TMJ Disorders

  TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders are a family of problems related to your complex jaw joint. If you have had symptoms like pain or a “clicking” sound, you’ll be glad to know that these problems are more easily diagnosed and treated than they were in the past. • Facial Trauma

• Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

  Some patients require minor oral surgical procedures before receiving a partial or complete denture, in order to ensure the maximum level of comfort. A denture sits on the bone ridge, so it is very important that the bone is the proper shape and size. If a tooth needs to be extracted, the underlying bone might be left sharp and uneven. For the best fit of a denture, the bone might need to be smoothed out or reshaped. Occasionally, excess bone would need to be removed prior to denture insertion.

  At the Center for Oral Reconstruction & Education, Dr. Grant or Dr. Mergelmeyer routinely check for signs of oral cancer during oral pathology consultations in our office in Orange, CA. In addition to a thorough check up, we recommend you perform monthly self-examinations of the mouth to eliminate all possibility of oral cancer. Your oral health is our top priority, and early detection can tremendously reduce complications, risks, and the need for a more invasive procedure in the future.

• Oral Infections

  Bacteria in the mouth can lead to various oral infections, such as viruses, tooth decay, and gum disease. Many of these only last a few days, and some are preventable if you consistently brush and floss. If you seem to have a persistent condition that refuses to go away, it is important that you come into our office for an evaluation right away.

• Bone Morpheogenetic Protein

  Bone morphogenic protein is an isolated protein that induces specific cells in our body to form new cartilage and bone. During surgery, the BMP is soaked onto and binds with a collagen sponge. The sponge is then designed to resorb, or disappear, over time. As the sponge dissolves, the bone morphogenic protein stimulates the cells to produce new bone. The BMP also goes away once it has completed its task of jump starting the normal bone healing process.

• Platelet Rich Protein

  Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is exactly what the name suggests. The substance is a by-product of blood (plasma) that is rich in platelets. Until now, its use has been confined to the hospital setting. This was due mainly to the cost of separating the platelets from the blood (thousands) and the large amount of blood needed (one unit) to produce a suitable quantity of platelets. New technology permits the doctor to harvest and produce a sufficient quantity of platelets from only 20 or 60 cc of blood drawn from the patient while they are having outpatient surgery.

  Our surgeons are proud to be providers of surgically-assisted orthodontics. Both adolescents and adults can enjoy the benefits of rapid orthodontic treatment in most cases from six to eight months. Common complications of conventional orthodontic care such as root resorption, decalcification, and relapse are often eliminated. In certain situations, bicuspid extraction and jaw surgery can be avoided.
